Chronology

Just like all east German student unions, the Studierendenwerk Thüringen has an eventful past behind it. The roots of the student unions reach back to the 1920s. After the second world war, the predecessors of today’s student unions were closed. Yet from 1990 onwards, consistent restorations ofthe student unions in east Germany took place, the last of which, in 2006, is responsible for the reestablishment of the Studentenwerk Thüringen. As of 13.07.16, Studentenwerk Thüringen has been renamed as Studierendenwerk Thüringen according to an amendment of the ThürStudWG law.

From Beginnings to Dissolution

1919

Students and college instructors found the Hochschul-Wirtschafts-Genossenschaft Dresden as the first legitimately independent organization in Germany dedicated to supporting students. It later acquired the name Studentwerk Dresden.

1921
Dresden becomes the seat of the Deutsches Studentenwerk. In the same year, the “Verein Jenaer Stundentenhilfe” (“Jena Society of Student Assistance”) is founded in Jena. It attends to the establishment of student kitchens and has at its disposal a sales department, book exchange and sewing and mending service.

1922
The loan association of the Deutschen Studentenschaft (German Student Body) is established. With the “mensa academica,” the first dormitory is opened in Jena.

1929
Students and other members of the college lay the foundation for a new student dormitory in Jena.

1930
Dedication of the student dormitory “Oberer Philosophenweg” in Jena.

1933
The “Jenaer Studentenhilfe” becomes a member of the “Deutsches Studentenwerk e.V.” From now on, it is known as the “Studentenwerk Jena e.V.”.

1935
Enactment of an ordinance for selecting university students based on physical fitness; the Academic Health Insurance Company comes under the administration of the student union.

1938
As the “Law of the Reichsstudentenwerk” comes into effect, local student support organizations become offices of the central agency in Berlin.

1941
The Reichsstudentenwerk becomes owner of the student dormitory in Jena.

1945
The Studentenwerk Jena is dissolved following the arrival of the American military. The “Jenaer Studentenhilfe G.m.b.H.” is created as the legal successor of the Studentenwerk.

1947
The Jenaer Studentenhilfe is totally dissolved. Its responsibilities are henceforth assumed by the social services office and the student council of the FSU.

1948
The FSU is appointed trustee of the student dining hall.

1953
