Living

Do you need accommodation?

If you want to apply for a place in Studentenwerk accommodation, you will need to fill out an application form online. You can find information about the application procedure here.

Our housing

Here you can see our accommodation in different locations and even have a look into the rooms available.

Service package

For international students we offer a service package, available in Erfurt, Ilmenau, Jena, Nordhausen, Schmalkalden and Weimar.

Broadcasting licence fee (GEZ)

In Germany, a monthly fee must be paid by every household for media broadcasting. Information about possible exemption can be obtained from our general social counseling service (ASB) and from the licence fee service from ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio.

'Living in a Student Hostel- An Illustrated Dictionary'

This illustrated dictionary is in three languages- German, English and Chinese- and is a useful tool for everyday student living. It is even available as an app for your smartphone!

'Life in Student Accommodation' booklet

For Erfurt, Ilmenau, Jena, Nordhausen, Schmalkalden and Weimar we have created a booklet, in German and Chinese, entitled 'Life in Student Accommodation' ('Leben im Wohnhaus').

Menus

The menus for our cafeterias (also known as Mensas) will tell you about what you can eat for lunch. They are also viewable via an app.

If you are looking for a part-time job, we have put together some useful tips for you about working during your studies. You can also find information about positions available on the wall in our information centers. We are regularly seeking students for part-time jobs in our Mensas and cafeterias.

Student loans (BAföG)

The Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) is the state-provided student support service for students who receive little to no financial support from their parents. International students can only receive BAföG under certain circumstances. Information is available from your BAföG office (BAföG-Amt).

Bursaries

Here is some information about various bursaries available. Information about bursaries for international students can be obtained from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Loans

If you do not receive any kind of bursary, working is not possible for you and you do not receive financial assistance for your studies, you still have the option to take out a loan. An educational or KfW loan is in certain circumstances possible for international students to receive. Information regarding these circumstances is available from the Bundesverwaltungsamt (BVA) for the educational loan and from the student finance offices in Erfurt, Jena and Ilmenau for the KfW loan.

Loan in case of hardship

If you are in a financial emergency that wasn't your fault and which threatens the future of your studies, the staff at our general social counseling service (ASB) can help you to apply for a loan in case of hardship.

Counselling and Social Matters

Information centers

In our on-site information centers in Erfurt (Infopunkt, Mensa Nordhäuser Strasse), Ilmenau (ASC), Jena (INFOtake), Schmalkalden (TROLL) and Weimar (INFOtake) you can receive information about services regarding all aspects of student life, for example the ISIC Card, the International Student Identity Card.

Studies with a child

If you have a child during your studies, Studentenwerk has many services to support you.

Psychosocial counseling (PSB)

You can use the services of PSB if you need to talk to a neutral person about yourself, your problems and your situation and to access further help.

General social counseling service (ASB)

ASB can direct you in your decisions regarding complex social issues.

Course Program

The Course Program offered by the Studentenwerk counseling service comprises of workshops, courses, talks and information events for you to take part in.

Legal advice

In co-ordinance with point 3 of the Thuringian Studentenwerk Law (Thüringer Studentenwerksgesetz) we offer legal advice as part of our field of responsibility and jurisdiction. Legal advice is offered free of charge by independent solicitors during the semester period.

Service package

For international students we offer a service package, available in Erfurt, Ilmenau, Jena, Nordhausen, Schmalkalden and Weimar.

Culture Newsletter

Our culture newsletter (Kulturnewsletter) informs you about student culture events in Thuringia.

Cafe International/Culture Talks

The Cafe International in Erfurt and Jena and Culture Talks in Weimar take you on a journey around the world and are an opportunity to meet new people.

Student Clubs

Experience student culture in the various student clubs in Thuringia.

International Center

In the International Center (Internationales Centrum) in Johannisplatz 26, Jena, you will find a meeting place for cultural exchanges. Here culture is experienced internationally and presented creatively.

Fremde werden Freunde ('Foreigners become Friends') Weimar

Do you want to get to know the country and the locals better? Our patron program will put you in touch with a friendly family from Weimar or with individual patrons. You will meet regularly, go on trips or cook together.

Student house on the Rennsteig

Whether you are planning a seminar, a weekend away or a holiday with the family, 'Haus Rosenbaum' in Siegmundsburg and the Ski and Hiking Hut in Steinfeld gives you great opportunities for an interesting visit to the Thuringian Forest ('Thüringer Wald').

Semester ticket

The semester ticket allows you to easily travel throughout Thuringia.

KuKo e.V.

Kulturelle Koordinierung ('Cultural Coordination') is your point of contact for cultural activities in Ilmenau. If you want to make your own film, are interested in fantasy literature, or learn how to juggle, here is a place to find like-minded people.

Funding of student cultural projects by Studentenwerk

Have you ever dreamed about exhibiting your artwork, organising your own concert or of putting on a workshop? Then come visit us in the Cultural Office (Kulturbüro). We will provide you with information and we also support projects financially.

Outside view on Studentenwerk

International partnerships and exchanges are very important to Studentenwerk. A view of our organization from outside is very helpful and there are always ways for us to improve our services for international students.
