Benefits for principal residence
At several university locations in Thuringia, the local government offers a financial incentive to students who declare their primary residence there. These cities want to preserve their population figures, and they receive money from a federal fund for every student who moves there. Note, however, that each city has its own rules.
Waiver of Radio & Television License Fees
The "ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice" is responsible for issuing waivers of broadcast fees. Waivers are granted only upon application and apply only for the future, i.e. beginning at the earliest in the month after the submission of an application. Broadcast fees are waived for students who receive financial aid and do not live with their parents. You must present your BAföG assessment – either the original or a certified copy – if you wish to receive a waiver. You can obtain information about the application procedure on www.rundfunkbeitrag.de. Students do not receive BAföG aid while living outside their parents’ home can only obtain a waiver in cases of hardship. However, what “hardship” means is an open question. It is also possible to receive a waiver if you belong to a different status group.
