BAföG (grant for German students)
The "Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAföG)" (Federal Training Assistance Act) is the state's study assistance scheme for students who receive little or no support from their parents. International students only receive BAfÖG under certain conditions. For more information, please contact your BAföG office (BAföG-Amt).
If you don’t receive a scholarship, if you can't find a job and if you need financial support for your studies, there is the possibility to take out a loan (Kredit). The educational loan Bildungskredit or the KfW loan (KfW-Kredit) are subject to certain conditions for international students. Information on these conditions can be obtained for the educational loan from the Federal Administration Office Bundesverwaltungsamt (BVA) and for the KfW loan from the service offices student finance offices in Erfurt, Ilmenau and Jena.
When you are in a financial emergency through no fault of your own which endangers your studies, you can contact our staff at the Allgemeine Sozialberatung (ASB, General Social Counselling) to apply for a hardship loan (Härtefalldarlehen).
