'Haus Rosenbaum' meeting house

Our meeting house, 'Haus Rosenbaum', the Studierendenwerk Thüringen student house, is situated directly on the Rennsteig route in the resort of Siegmundsburg, on the ridge of the Thuringian Forest. Siegmundsberg is at a height of 760m to 814m above sea level and boasts attractive scenery all year round along with a wide range of relaxation and leisure activities. Siegmundsberg, which belongs to the town of Neuhaus am Rennweg, runs along approximately 1.5km of the B281 road, between Neuhaus am Rennweg and Eisfeld (see map), and is surrounded by fields and coniferous forests.

'Haus Rosenbaum' has over 49 beds available in 18 singe, double and shared rooms. All rooms are equipped with a WC, shower and flatscreen satellite TV. Public areas of the building also have WiFi available. The restaurant can sit 60 people, the cosy farm lounge 25 people. Half and full board accommodation is possible, as well as self-catering. During the summer months, a range of Thuringian specialities are available from our own grill.

History of the house

'Haus Rosenbaum' has a colorful history. Johann Georg Elias Christian Rosenbaum, a butcher and innkeeper, had the house built between 1842-43 as a guest house, as well as a brewery and beer cellar. The house, which was inherited, enlarged and converted over generations, remained family-owned until 1973. Oskar Rosenbaum, for example, set up a slaughterhouse with a butcher's shop within the brewery from 1915. In 1909, the first public telephone in the area was installed in the guesthouse. From 1917 to 1918, the hall of the house served as a ***. Even a school was temporarily located in the house from 1921 to 1922, during a renovation of the local school building. After 1945, the house developed into the cultural meeting point of the area, with regular dance evenings, film showings, gatherings and GDR holiday services. Isolde Rosenbaum- by this point the fifth generation- finally sold the house in 1967 to the University of Jena and managed it until her death in 1987, followed by her husband until 1988, before ownership of the house transferred to Studentenwerk Jena. A boiler house was erected, the hall torn down, and in 1975 the guest house was closed. Karin Kühnlenz, a staff member of Studentenwerk Jena, managed the house from 1988, followed by Denny Heim in 2008. As of 2017, the latest renovation work to take place was the conversion of the former stables into a large seminar room.
