Extension
VMT ticket
As of December 13, 2020, the VMT will expand its area and this will
then include the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district and the Saale-Orla
district. Students whose semester ticket includes the VMT ticket will be
able to use public transportation in the named districts at no
additional cost with their semester ticket as of this date. The details
can be found here: https://www.vmt-thueringen.de/verbunderweiterung
Important
exception: The VMT semester ticket is not valid for train rides to and
from Bad Kösen. An additional ticket is still required for this.
Regional public transportation ticket
Students at the universities in Jena can use the busses and trams of the Jena regional transportation system with their semester ticket. In the busses and trams of the Jena regional transportation system, an extra ticket must be bought in order to bring your bicycle along.
Control
of the thoska as a ticket in Jena local traffic
For the examination of the entitlement to travel, the student ID card must be handed over by the respective student to the control personnel upon request. During the check, the control personnel only reads the eTicket from the student ID card. The validity of the eTicket is displayed electronically during the check. Data on ticket usage and personal data of the holder of the right to travel will not be stored when a valid ticket is presented.
If the student ID card (Thoska) is not technically legible, the passenger will be issued with a request for proof of use of the local public transport system for a period of 7 days. If the student presents a valid and legible student identity card or a provisional student identity card within this period, the matter is settled. If no valid semester ticket is presented, the process will be treated as driving without a valid ticket.
VMT – Network (Verkehrsgemeinschaft Mittelthüringen)
Students of the FSU Jena can also from the WS 13/14 on use all routes of transportation companies of the VMT (Verkehrsverbund Mittelthüringen) - see the summary.
Attention! Important Tip:
The VMT-Semester ticket unit is valid within the entire VMT region. According to Point 3 (Inter-regional trips) of the VMT-fee regulations, the VMT semester ticket is only valid for trips which begin and end within the regional network and are recognized within the entire area of the travelled route.
If this is not the case, a complete and separate ticket must be purchased (from start-station to end-station) for the standard fee of the issuing transportation company used for this trip.
A
combination of the VMT semester ticket and the standard fee for a trip is not
allowed.
For example, the semester ticket can be used for a trip with Line
820 of the Oberland Omnibus Transport (OVO) from Jena to Stadtroda. For the
part of the trip on Line 820 from Jena to Wolfersdorf, the VMT- fee, which
includes the VMT ticket, is recognized. However, for a trip from Jena to
Neustadt, a ticket must be bought for the entire trip for the standard price of
the OVO. The trip cannot be broken up into segments; i.e. from Jena to
Wolfersdorf and Wolfersdorf to Neustadt.

Redemtions
You can't place an application for the repayment of the regional public transportation ticket.
Train ticket
The train ticket is valid in trains of regional transportation (RE, RB) on all routes of the DB Regio up to the last station of the according train in Thuringia (valid range semester ticket).
The semester ticket is also valid for the following regional transportation:
Exempted are the following routes and trains:
As long as the bike transport is free for all passengers in the regional trains, this also applies for the train ticket. Students, who have not received a student identification card from their university, or have received a student identification card that does not provide the usual discounts, do not receive a DB Regio train ticket through the university and therefore do not have any right to use the public transportation. This especially applies to guest and side students or students of long distance- and online courses of study.
Attention:
The semester ticket is
always valid until the last train stop in Thuringia. When an
adjoining regional day ticket (Länder-Ticket Bayern, Niedersachsen,
or Hessen) is purchased for the onward journey, the semester ticket
is valid up until the state border (regional day tickets are also
valid up until the border of Thuringia). In Thuringia the university
institute and Studierendenwerk card thoska
is valid as a travel ticket. The only student identification issued by the
Friedrich-Schiller-University is the thoska card. Please note: The certificate
issued from the service office for students, who do not possess a thoska card
and also do not wish to have one, is not recognized by transportation personnel
as a valid transportation ticket.
IC - Trains between Gera and Erfurt can be used as regional trains
Since December 2018, three Intercity trains have been connecting Gera via Jena, Weimar and Erfurt with Kassel and the Ruhr area, thus integrating the Thuringian towns again into DB's long-distance network. Between Gera and Erfurt, the IC trains stop in Hermsdorf-Klosterlausnitz, Stadtroda, Jena-Göschwitz, Jena West and Weimar and replace here the regional express trains (RE 1 Göttingen – Glauchau).
In addition, the Free State of Thuringia has concluded an agreement with DB Fernverkehr on the recognition of local tariffs for long-distance rail passenger services, i.e. the Intercity trains in the Gera-Erfurt section can also be used with tickets for local transport or the Mittelthüringen Transport Authority (VMT). Therefore, the Thuringia semester ticket and the Thuringia plus semester ticket are also valid here.
Please note:
When you plan a trip beyond Erfurt and use one of these IC trains, you MUST pay the missing ticket price for the transition to IC. The thoska card is only valid as far as Erfurt in IC trains, and from Erfurt again in regional trains.
Exception Regulations
Students, who have not received
a student identification card from their university, or have received a student
identification card that does not provide the usual discounts, do not receive a
DB Regio train ticket through the university and therefore do not have any
right to use the public transportation. This especially applies to guest and
side students or students of long distance- and online courses of study.
Redemptions
Upon placing an application, the following students can receive a refund for the train ticket contribution fee:
According to the fee regulations of the Studierendenwerk, the corresponding applications must be submitted to the Studierendenwerk by the day before the beginning of the semester. Please use the appropriate refund-form for your university location . The application must have been received in the INFOtake Jena by the official beginning of the semester.
