FAQ: Application

Application

All students enrolled at state universities in Thuringia or persons who have applied to a Thuringian university for the following semester are eligible for accommodation.

The online application form is available on our website six months before the start of the following semester.

The application period therefore begins:

  • on 1st April for studies beginning in the winter semester
  • on 1st October of the previous year for the following summer semester

Yes, absolutely! It is generally worth applying, because even if you do not receive an offer of accommodation during the current application phase, you will automatically be placed on the waiting list.

Such housing preferences can be specified in the comments field of the online application.
Important: A separate application must be submitted for each prospective tenant.

Accommodation is allocated at the earliest six weeks before the start of the semester in the order in which applications are received. As soon as accommodation becomes available, you will receive all the necessary contract documents by email. The rental agreement is concluded when the documents are signed and returned to your administrator by email within the specified period and the security fee and deposit of €300 is paid on time.

Detailed information can also be found here.

There could be several reasons for this. Accommodation is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. It may simply be that it is not yet your turn. It also depends on whether there are currently places available in your preferred location, preferred hall of residence(s) and your preferred type of accommodation.

The minimum length of stay in the Studierendenwerk's student dormitories is one semester. The maximum length of stay is 10 semesters.  Different contract periods can only be agreed with students who are participating in a specific programme (e.g. Erasmus, German Academic Exchange Service).

Most rental agreements initially run for one year. After that, it is usually possible to extend the agreement without any complications, provided that there is still demand and availability.

Unfortunately, advance viewings are not possible. However, you can find sample photos of all the student dormitories on our website.

Accommodation is mainly in rooms for sole use with shared use of kitchen, bath/shower and WC within a shared flat. Some of the shared flats also have sanitary facilities for sole use. In addition, single apartments with kitchen/kitchenette, bath/shower and WC for sole use are also available.

Basic information can be found on our website under the individual hall of residence profiles. If you cannot find the answer to your question there, please contact our hall of residence team directly by email.

We try to take your wishes into account as much as possible. However, if demand exceeds supply, we will allocate alternative types of accommodation so that you can still get a place.

You can reject an offer. In this case, however, you will be returned to the allocation round - with the risk that no place can be offered to you later.

Our rents are flat rates - this means that all operating costs, including water, electricity and heating, are already included.

You can only move in on the date specified in the tenancy agreement. Unfortunately, earlier move-ins are not possible.

As many students are waiting for accommodation, we set deadlines of a few days during which you can decide whether to accept or decline the room offered. If you do not respond to our offer within the deadline, we will allocate the room to other students. We therefore recommend that you check your email inbox regularly after submitting your application (please also check your spam folder!).

If you are a minor, we require confirmation of this and the signature of your legal guardian. Minor applicants will be given preferential consideration.

If we do not receive the signed rental agreement by the deadline and the security deposit and deposit fee are not paid on time, the offer will expire without replacement. Your application will then be removed from the list of applicants. You will need to reapply if you still wish to live in one of our dormitories.

In this case, your offer will also expire without replacement and your application will be cancelled. The contract and deposit must be submitted within the specified deadlines. In this case, you will also have to reapply if you still wish to live in one of our dormitories.

Processing may take several working days. Please be patient - we will contact you as soon as your payment has been received and verified.

Apply in good time anyway to keep your chances of getting a place. If you do not receive a visa, you can cancel the rental agreement free of charge by presenting the rejection notice.

You can still apply in this case. Admission to a Thuringian university is not a prerequisite for applying for our halls of residence. However, proof of enrolment at a Thuringian university must be provided by 31st October or 30th April at the latest after the start of the semester. Otherwise, the rental agreement may be terminated prematurely by the Studierendenwerk.

For data protection reasons, we are not permitted to disclose any personal contact details. You will get to know your flatmates when you move in.

Yes. Our rooms are usually furnished, but crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils and similar items are not included.

The Studierendenwerk Thüringen cannot store your existing inventory. Heavy furniture may only be moved within your own flat or room. You may bring your own furniture to the dormitory. However, this must be stored in your own rented rooms (single room or single flat) and not in communal areas.

Movin in

Yes, from the start of the tenancy you can decide when you want to move in. However, you must pay the rent from the date specified in the contract.

The security and deposit fee amounts € 300.00. It is not subject to interest in accordance with § 551 para. 3, sentence 5 BGB (German Civil Code). As a rule, the deposit will be transferred to an account specified by you two months after the end of the rental agreement.

The rental payment is made by direct debit from a German account. After individual verification, the direct debit procedure is also possible from accounts from the so-called SEPA countries.

On the day you move in, you will receive your key or the locking card from your dormitory administrator. You will receive the necessary contact details for making an appointment after the contract has been confirmed.

As a rule, our rooms are furnished and equipped with a bed, a wardrobe, a desk and a chair. You will have to bring your own furniture for unfurnished rooms. Kitchen furniture is available everywhere. You will receive information about the furnishings of the place of residence with the contract documents. You can buy linen packages (pillow, comforter/blanket, bed linen).
