ÖPNV (Local public transport)

In some university towns (Erfurt, Gera, Jena, Nordhausen and Weimar) the semester ticket also includes regional public transport. The semester ticket is then also valid as a local transport ticket.
In public transport (tram and bus), children under the age of eight are transported free of charge and must be accompanied by an adult until they start school (first day of school). From school enrolment up to and including 14 years of age, children can use Kinder-Einzelfahrt (single ticket for children), Kinder-Einzelfahrt BahnCard (single ticket for children BahnCard) and Kinder-4-Fahrtenkarte (ticket for four tram rides for children). School-age children can also use the following: weekly travel pass for school-age children and apprentices, monthly travel pass for school-age children and subscription monthly travel pass for school-age children and apprentices.

Students of the two state universities in Erfurt are entitled to use the services of EVAG (Erfurter Verkehrsbetriebe AG, public transport company) free of charge with their semester ticket on all routes/lines in tariff zone 10. An additional ticket must be purchased to take bicycles on EVAG buses and trams. Route maps, timetables and further information are available at www.evag-erfurt.de.

Students at the Jena universities may use the services of the Jena public transport system free of charge with their semester ticket on all routes in tariff zone 30. An additional ticket must be purchased for taking bicycles on the buses and trams of Jena's public transport system. Please note: inspections of thoska card when travelling by bus and tram
Students at Friedrich Schiller University and University of Applied Sciences "Ernst Abbe" must hand over their student ID to the inspection staff upon request to check their entitlement to travel. The inspector only reads the eTicket from the student ID card when inspecting the ticket. The validity of the eTicket is displayed electronically during the check. Data on the use of the ticket as well as personal data of the holder of the travel authorisation are not stored when a valid ticket is presented.
If the student ID card (thoska) cannot be read technically, the passenger will be issued with a proof of entitlement to use local transport for a period of seven days. If the respective student presents a valid and readable student ID or a temporary student ID within this period, the incident is settled. If a valid semester ticket is not presented, the matter is considered as travelling without a valid ticket.

E-scooter sharing: Students at both universities in Jena can use the e-scooter sharing service of the Jena public transport system as an additional offer to the semester ticket. In return, students receive free minutes, for which no further additional payments are due. Details on how to use the service and on possible test rides can be found here: www.nahverkehr-jena.de/evita

Students at UAS Nordhausen may use the services of Verkehrsbetriebe Nordhausen (public transport company) free of charge with their semester ticket on the routes of tariff zone 1 of the Nordhausen public transport system.
